SUMMARY AX I) FORECAST. Wellington, Last Night. The following is Mr Bates' weather •summary for the past 24 hours: — The barometer has risen rapidly in the south, with south-westerly winds strong to gale in many parts. The weather has been cold and storm in the southern dis--1 rifts, and much rain lias fallen in Westland and Otago, but fair to cloudy conditions have ruled elsewhere. Forecast.—Present indications are for strong but decreasing southerly winds, changing again shortly to freshening northeriies and westerlies; weather changeable, with scattered showers. A temporary improvement may be expected, but increasing cloudiness and another westerly disturbance are likely to follow i n from 24 to 30 hours, " the barometer rising temporarily in the south in the meantime.
