j THE TARAKAKI MEETHTCk I (Notes- by "Mbtnroaj.")' » Tlio Taranaki Jockey Club's autmwn. ' meeting will go down to history as- om • of the most successful, and the most en joyable on record'. Weather condition were perfect, and tlio scenic cliann of the club's property and surroundings wvre never seen to' better advantage. The attendance was representative of the chief sporting centres of the Dominion, and tlie class of horses engaged' very fine. Naturally the tot'alisator turnover showed an increase, and but for poor fields i' n * couple of races this increase might have been considerably more than £2077. The conduct of the meeting justified the unstinted' praise heard from not only Taranaki sports, but from outsiders whose experience makes their opinion all the more reliable. Not only was the gathering a great success for the Club, but it was the means of bringing many visitors to the town, and many more may be expected to attend future meetings. The initiation of the Taranaki Stakes proved to be an excellent move, and the presence of noted' weight-for-age performers like Merry Roe, Emperador and Flying Star proved a great draw. The success of Sir George Clifford's colt was well received. Few have done so much for racing as Sir George Clifford, and he thoroughly deserves the success which comes his way.
The chief open handicap events fell | to Aucklanders, Phosphorous won the Cup after being badly placed in the earlie)r stages, and Goldsize, whose quality was already well-known tj> Taranaki sports, scored a meritorious bictory in the Paul Memorial Handicap. On Takapuna form Bedford would probably have been eoual to defeating botli these horses, but Bedford (it was reported), was not brought down because the Cup looked a "moral" for Emperador. But there are no "morals" i n horse racing. Had anyone offered to bet that Kmperadcr would not get a place in the Taranaki Cup the laver would-have been deemed fully qualified for free board and lodging at Porirua. This writer holds that Emperador was noorlv handled, and consequently badlv interfered within the Cup race, but his subsequent noor showing in the Stakes showed that he was much below his best form. Tre» Lucerne. Play Off. Sir Moseley and Simple Sam scored in the open sprints, and. the honours here rest with Haweratrained horses.
Amongst the hurdles Stvrax deserves pride of place. With 10.10 he ran Merry Guv to a narrow margin o M the first day, and on Thursday carried 11.1 to victory in fine style. Merrv Guy. who woii on Wednosdav, was in receipt of 11 lbs from Styrak, hut he showed great gamoriess at the right end and scored on his merits.
Combustion whose had luck at Hawera was mentioned in these columns, won each day here, and with Ngapoto shared the honour of being the only double winners at the meeting. Combustion had Hell on hiin here, and that made all tli» difference. The success of Ngapoto was a pleasinrr. though, unckrcctcd feature of the gathering. Trainer R. Johnson always had a good word to say for the Maniapoto gelding, and the nag was produced in fine nick this week. Patronymic had a verv simple victory in the Mimi Welter. Hawera running making the race look a foregone conclusion.
Amongst the "hurry up" class Tni--prove (Advance —I,yonesse) proved to be too speedy for our best —Fortify. Tirana and Co., but the locally trained Bay Prince vanquished a weaker lot on the second day, paying easily the biggest dividend of the meeting. Rongaro appeared to be unlucky each start, and mav break it for a win shortly. Arras, by Birkenhead —Epilogue is also a promising performer. Crown Head, a much boomed Wancanui neddy. seems hardly worth his tucker. Vestalis was not lucky at the barrier, and finished a long way back in the Moturoa Hack Race Lad o' Gowrie, a member of P. Johnson's team, ran well on Wednesdav, and but for falling might have troubled Bay Prince on the concluding day. On the concluding day. On the whole this class was a trifle better all round than usual. The winning owners at the meetincr were:—E. Onton £440, Sir Geo. Clifford £4lO. J. H. Walters £203. G. Morris £l7O. H. Cleland £l7O. R. Barlow .£13.1. P Sehvood £135. R. Hicks £125. E. G. Mailer £llO. F. Hall £IOO, A. W. Gillies £OS, F. G. Roe £OO, F. Aubrev £OO. J. McCarthy £RS, G. T). Greenwood £SO. P. King £25, S, Brick £SO, v Webb. P. Rosemead, J. Britton, T.. Llovd, J. George. A. G. Crawford and Mrs M. Miscall £ls each: T. O'Neill £lO. Jockey W. Bell rode four winners, C. Brow n and R. Reed two each, and R. Thompson, G. Clarke, O. McCarten. A. Reed. H. Young, W. Adams, L> Wilson and A. Ward on" each. Young C'nrke, R. J. Mason's lad, won the Cup on Phosphorous, and he showedj good horsemanship on several other occasions. He ir-m promising lad.
The three placed 1-orscs in the Cup vllcd the places in the Paul Mcmori»< form being good to follow. Last year Goldsize won the Cup and afterwards ran third in the Paul Memorial Handicap, and this year. Phosphorous performed likewise.
