EMPIRE PICTURES. i I Last night a delighted fudience wit* nessed Kalem's latest production, with' Miss Alice Joyce i n the leading rolo. "The Weakling," as the film is named, is a story of how Nancy, a daughter of Judge Berry, devotes her time to the ■ education of the illiterate mountaineers. Litt Largin, whose physical cowardice has wo n for him the nickname of ''the weakling," is her brightest pupil. Litt's The girl despises him, and is later inbrother Dave falls in love with Nancy,; s suited by him in tlio presence of Litt, who fears to interfere. , Later, however,, he rescues Nancy from Dave'si embrace. They have a desperate liattfe' Dave is beaten down. Fearing lie has killed, Dave, Litt flees. Dave recovers. Nancy traces Litt, and persuades her father to send him to college. There, his cowardice again makes him an object of eon-' tempt, but he graduates at the head of his class. Nancy, and her father attend the commencement oxcVcises. She promises to wed Nancy. A sneak thief enters , the cloakroom. Nancy enters, and Lit# finds her confronting the crook, but his cowardice causes him to run. Filled with contempt, breaks their engagement. Litt's father is arrested lH a revenue raid. In the fight that follows, the man slays one of the Government agents. He. is placed on a trial of murder. Judge Berry hears the case. Lift overhear* Pave nml several others planning to shoot up the court and rcß-< cue his 'father. Not wishing to betray; his brother, he seeks a means to frustrate the plot. The boy enters the court room during the trial A move by Dave causes him to snrni'; forward. A shot rings out. Litt falls with the bullet intended for Nancy's father in his own body.
