BUOYANCY OF TRADE

TWO YEARS COMPARED. INCREASE IN 1014 DESPTTE WAR CONDITIONS. EXPORTS MORE BY 3% MILLIONS. Despite the fact that for five months of the year 1014 the Empire was engcgej in a world-wide, war, the trade statictics of New Zealand, as just revealed by Mr Malcolm Fraser, the Government Statistician, show a most reassuring buoyancy for the. twelve months ended December 31st last. The figures compiled by Mr Fraser i'.i his latest "Monthly Abstract of Statistics," so far confirm the prophecy that New Zealand, being a country dependent almost entirely upon its primary products, will suffer least of any country in the world-crisis; indeed, in the long run, may find her prosperity increased. The following tabic, for instance, gives the total value of the principal exports from Januarv to December <n each of the years 1013 and 1914;

Product 1013. 1014. £. . £ Butter 2.0fil ,(isl 2,338,570 Cheese 1,770,207 2,540.123 Kauri Gum f>40,100 407.444 Frozen beef 347,383 1,020,520 Frozen lamb 2.332,372 2,554,517 Frozen mutton ... • 1,030.332 2.115.050 Tallow (103.088 004,348 Timber 318.707 422.515 Wool 8,058,020 0,318,114 INCREASE OF THREE MILLIONS.

The above table shows only the principal primary products. Some of the minor articles, such as rabbit-skins, woollen piece-goods, etc., show in some cases an increase and in others a decrease. Gold and silver both show decreases, but. this is natural, as their exportation has been prohibited. However. the total figures may be summed up as follows; — 1913. 1914. £ £

Total export of N.Z. produce, .Tan.T>i»c 22,577,800 25,084,717 Total all exports (other than produce) 232,473 200,208
