'ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the New Plymouth branch of the Railway Amalgamated Society was held in the Railway Hall yesterday. Mr. W. Donolxne presided over a lfcrge attendance of monitors. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Chairman, (Mr. C. Edwards; vice-chairman, Mr. E. M. MeFarlane;
treasurer, Mr. J. Cammock (re-elected); secretary, Mr. S. G. Smith (re-elected); committee, -Messrs Heed, Connolly, I)e----pree, Barney, Thomson, .Mack, "iJoldt, Lendrum, Glennic, Keating, Garner, Gore, Knight, Ennis and Johnston; auditors, .Messrs Pellew and Key; trustees, Messrs Donoliue, Neill and* Haw. HIGH COST OF LIVING. It was unanimously resolved—That this large and representative meeting of railwaymen views with alarm the rapid increase in the cost of commodities, and views with regret the apparent disinclination to grapple effectually with those who are exploiting the people in a time of national crisis, and tiuit the Government lie urged to tirUe immediate and effective steps to remedy the present state of affairs. .INCREASED WAGES URGED. It was resolved that the forthcoming conference of the Society be urged, as a matter of urgency, to take the first opportunity of interviewing the Hon. Prime Minister for Railways and request them to grant a general increase of wages throughout the service, and so enable members to meet the present high cost of living. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded to the outgoing officers and to the presiding officer.
