TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa"). The Taranaki Jockey (.'lub's autumn meeting, which takes place oil Wednes- j day and Thursday, is being eagerly eagerly looked forward to by not only Taranaki sports, but by visitors from Auckland, Wanganui and Wellington.' The attendance promises to lie large, and as the fields are good, ail enjoyable meeting awaits patrons. Excursion trains and cheap fares should bring a big crowd from down the line. The club's progrcssiveness is shown ill«. a hundred ways, and one minor detail which strikes the rao-gocr as a particularly happy suggestion is the arrangement for a through train from IWanganui on the morning of the first day's races, returning to Wiinganui on Thursday evening. The visitors from south of llawcra will be able to see the two day;.' racing with no loss of time. The move will be appreciated by southern sportsmen, and no doubt a good number will make the trip. The progeny of the defunct Multifid were again to the fore at Gisborne on Saturday, Mutliply, Multiplicity and Multiplication leading fields home, and Mnltikoir running second. King of Athol and Mummer, two winners, were sired by Gazeley. The Canterbury summer meeting—a one-day gathering—has dropped io the realm of mediocrity nowadays. Saturday's fixtures produced nothing startling. though the defeat if Nones in the Middle Park Plate occasioned surprise in some quarters. The winner turned up in Adjutant, the well-named colt by Martian—Discipline, carrying Sir Geo. Clifford's "chequers." The. same colors were first past the post in the Hornby Welter, Snapdragon winning comfortably from/ Peg and Mt. Victooria. Meltcliixoff registered his first victory in the Dominion. I believe, in the Trial Stakes, and Ogier repeated his Trentham form in the Post Handicap. The consir-tent Specialfirni returned a good dividend in the M'dsunimer Handicap. The favorite, D»n Francisco, evidently ran up to track form, but 2.30 was too torrid for him. Mr. .Tames Hawkins, the owner of Lord Multifid, )has secured Toatere, with the object of racing the horse in 'Australia.
Considerable d'scussion is taking place as to the weight Kmperador will be required to carry in the Taranaki Cup. One rule oil the Taranaki programme reads: "The winner of any race after the declaration of weights may be re-handicapped." This looks plain enough, hut a special rule in connection with the Cup race itself is: "Tn the event of any horse winning a handicap of the value of 100 sovs. or over after tin l declaration of weights the handicapper may, if he thinks fit, l'e-hartdicap each winner." This special rule apparently over-rules the general rule, so that Emperador may escape a penalty to. morrow. Those who fancied tlie Charlemagne IT. horse with a penalty will have their conviction somewhat strengthened now.
