SHEARERS lAS SOLDIERS. (Wellington. Last Night. Owing to the finish of the shearing season in New Zealand, about 200 shearers have left these shores for Australia during the past three weeks, and it is anticipated that an even larger number will depart during the next few weeks. Tn all probability many of , these men will join the. Australian Expeditionary Forces. Already over 150 I members of the New Zealand Shearers' Association have joined the New Zealand forces for service abroad. SHIPS FOR FROZEN PRODUCE. STILL A POSSIBLE SHORTAGE. : Wellington, Last Night. The Government has received cabled advice to the effect that the Federal Shire learner Suffolk will not be returni ing to New Zealand to load cargo, as was expected. The insulated cargo space on the Suffolk is equivalent to 1-20,000 carcases. The Suffolk was to load here in Marcli next. Tt is hoped that arrangements may be made for the | Suffolk to adhere to her original loadI ing dates in New Zealand, and eorret spondence is passing with that end in view. If the Suffolk is withdrawn, it will mean the elimination from the quantity of insulated tonnage of about 310,000* tons of freight and carcase space, taking into account the loss of the Tokomaru and the fire on the Nairnshire, which will prevent her returning to this country in time to be of service. These two steamers, between them, would carry about 11)0,000 carcases, and they would be due here in May in the ordinary course. ASHBURTON STIRRED. VIGOROUS COLLECTION FOR RELIEF FUNDS. Ashburton, Last Night. During the last four months the Ashburton fund for the relief of distress in Britain and Belgium has been subscribed slowly but steadily, and on Friday its total stood at £2500. The committee resolved a fortnight ago that a bigger effort should be made, however, and a representative meeting of the public was held yesterday to urge the claims of the fund, and to organise collecting on a more extensive basis. It was stated that so far three-quarters of the money subscribed had been sent to Britain, and the meeting unanimously resolved that in future all donations should be in aid of tlie Belgians! unless specially carmarked otherwise by donors. It was decided to divide the Ashburton county into districts and canvass the wliole energetically, with a view to bringing the fund up to *£sooo within a montli On Friday the County Council had voted £250 as a first instalment towards the fund, but the meeting expressed itself as dissatisfield with this, and with only one dissentient (the County chairman) carried a resolution asking the Council to give £2OOO as its next instalment. A collection was taken up in the room, and a sum of £575 was secured before the meeting closed. A GOOD INVESTMENT.
