Letters from Austrians in the Carpathians assent that the soldiers are dying from cold and the wounded and sick falling a prey to the wolves and bears. A Russian military expert says that despite the efforts of Germany it will find difficulty in passing through the critical summer months till the new harvest; in fact, time is on our side. This explains the deliberation of our conduct of the war. While it does not promise brilliant victories it does not risk irreparable losses. Times and Sydney Sun Services London, February 3.
Pctrograd reports that Russia lias decided to regard the bombardment of unfortified towns as an act of piracy. Russia's decision is influenced by the fact that documents found on dead German officers in Poland show that the Kaiser ordered the troops to treat the Cossacks as robbers. Pctrograd, February 3. A communique states that the Germans, constantly harassed by the cavalry, have fallen back on Lipno. The German attack northward of Boreimoff was repulsed with heavy losses. Their attempts southwards of the Pilica were unsuccessful. IWe have advanced to a point in the Dukla Pass, almost in the interior, and traversed the principal height, capturing guns, howitzers, and many prisoners. We "repelled an attack' south east of the Uszok Pass, with enormous Herman losses, and annihilated the battalions south-east of the Beskid Pass. ARMIES OF PRISONERS IN RUSSIA. A report has reached Geneva, from Vienna that commanders fighting against the Russians, have been instructed to shoot down all Roumanians serving as volunteers in the Austrian army in Bukovina and Transylvania. HEAVY AUSTRIAN LOSSES. Received 5, 12.35 a.m. London, February 4. The Daily Mail's Pctrograd correspondent says that from twelve to fifteen Austro-German Army Corps arc engaged in the advance on the Carpathian front of eighty miles. The effort to relieve Przemysl and the five days' fighting in the Striji district resulted in very heavy Austrian losses.
