Mr Wm. Slaughter, formerly inspector of factories here, is re-visiting Now Plymouth.

Mr Alex. Jameson, national secretary for the Y.M.CCA. of New Zealand, and Mr A. Varney, general secretary at Wellington, have been on & visit to New Plymouth.

The death is reported of Mr George Luke, builder, of Wellington, a brother of the Mayor of Wellington. Up to the time of his retirement the previous night deceased wag in his usual state of (health.

A London cablegram slates that Hon. E. S. Montagu, Under-Secretary for India, succeeds the Bight Hon. C. F. Masternnn in the Lmchy of (Lanca a t'?r : and the Hon. F. X> Ac'kland, Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs, succeeds the Hon. Montagu.

Mr 0. E. Mackay, of Wanganui, has been deputed by the Crown Law Department to defend Albert Eotfcmann on his tria'. on a charge of murder at Rur.hine in December last. The tidal will be held during the Supreme Court session, which begins at Wanganui on the 12th inst.

Lieutenant Hartnell. who, is now at Trentham camp, preparatory to going to the front, was last night unanimously elected a lifemem'ber of the Taranaki Kifle Association. Members were very 'eulogistic in referring to the services he had rendered the association since its inauguration.

The Rev. C. F. Askew, vicar of St. Mark's Wellington, is at present seriously ill in a private hospital in New Ply mouth. Some ten days ago, when he was at the Mountain House with a party climbing Mount Egmont, Mr, Askew was suddenly taken ill, ana he was conveyed at once to New Plymouth. During the days following his condition; was critical, hut later news was better. In any event, he "will be unable to gq home to Wellington for some weeks.

Friends will hear with great regret of the dcatii of Mrs T. A. Blyth, adaughter of the late Mr John Winks. Some years ago she married Mr Blyth, a teacher in the service of the Wanganui Education Board, who was for some tirau in Hawera, and subsequently was master at Hurley rillp, but latterly .had been at Ohakune. Mrs Blyth, wc understand, had been ailing aome weeks, but news of her death will come as a shock to many old friends in this district, who will ihave deep sympathy with Mr Blyth.
