Sellers were practically absent, and the bears rushed up the prices. The excitement was increased by rumours that Italy was buying heavily. May options were quoted at 157V4 to 165 cents; July, 139 to 143y„ cents. PRESIDENT WILSON REAPS HIS HARVEST. GERMAN SYMPATHISERS GROW INSOLENT. A PRO-GERMAN CAMPAIGN COMMENCES. THE UNIT REACHED. London, February 2. The Times' Washington correspondent states it is clear that members of the Administration arc exercised by the discovery that the sale of ships will assist the German propagandists. It is generally believed that, though President Wilson devised the Ships Purchase Bill for the purpose of acquiring the interned vessels, it is unlikely he will use the measure as intended in August. Mr Wilson states that he is determined to avoid complications with foreign countries and use the powers under the Bill with the greatest discretion. Representative Barthold's meeting on Saturday was a great shock to public opinion, particularly the tlirdat* that five million members of German-Ameri-can societies would contest in favour tf pro-Gorman candidates. The New York Times says that Americans are very indulgent to German citizens but, when in insolence they threaten to use the ballot to punish Americans who refuse to applaud the Kaiser's enterprises of blood and slaughter, it is I'ccessary to warn them that they have reached the permissible limit. Many newspapers make similar strictures. FOODSTUFFS AS CONTRABAND. Washington, February 2. Britain has notified the United States that all foodstuffs for Britain's enemies will in future be regarded as contraband. "THE HOHENZOLLERN ADVENTURE." NOT CLEARLY RECOGNISED YET. Received 3, 5.15 p.m. London, February 3. The New York paper American agrees that the disastrous nature of the Hohenzollern adventure is not yet clearly realised, b\it misgivings are forgotten in the noisy campaign of hate against England.
