The by-election for tlie DunedinCentral seat took place to-day, the final figures being:— C. E. Statham (Government).. 3843 J. W. Miinro (Labor) 3826 Majority for Statham .... t 18 ' There are 222 absent votes, and 911 seamen's votes to come. A HEAVY POLL. Dunedin, Later. A great deal of interest was taken in the Dunedin Central election to-day. The weather was fine until late in tbV afternoon, when rain fell for a time. The total number of names on the roll was 0416, and 7088 valid votes wer« cast, as against 7399 at the general election in December. Large crowds Congregated in front of the newspaper offices, awaiting the results. The absent voters are scattered aQ over the Dominion, and probably the M* suit will be indefinite for a few days. [At the election in December, the first figures published gave Mr. Munro ai lead, but at the magisterial rcoount it was discovered that US votes credited to him were really informal, due to th» error of one of the deputy returningofficers, and Mr. Statham was declared elected, the figures being: Statham, 3744; Munro, 3732.]
