A small minority wished for a general strike in the event of mobilisation. Signer Turati delivered a n anti-German speech, declaring that if intervention was necessary the Socialists would fight with the patriotic majority of Italians. They were prepared to risk expulsion from the party in order to help the country. THE POPE PRAYS FOR PEACE.
Rome, February 1. Tlie I'ope, in a letter to the Bishop of Bordeaux, says: "Nothing seems more desirable than the cessation of the long and cruel war. To the rapid attainment of that end we have directed all our plans and efforts. May God turn towards thoughts of peace the hearts of those who hold the destinies of our peoples."
