The Daily News' Athens correspondent says that the Turks are preparing to advance on the Suez Canal in three lines, the first near the coast, the second twelve miles inland, and the third further south. German engineers are constructing a light railway, and keeping pace with the advance to supply water. Received 29, 1.25 a.m. Cairo, January 28. Merchantmen have been ordered to enter the Canal in convoys, and the crews and passengers are ordered to keep below as much as possible. The ships' bridges are being protected with sand-bags or steel plates. POSSIBLE RIVAL DISPOSED OF. • Received 29, 125 a.m. Petrograd, January 28. Halil Pasha, Commander of thd Eleventh Turkish Army Corps, was executed at the instance of Enver Bey for blundering at Karaurgan. FIGHTING NEAR THE SUEZ CANAL. TURKISH COLUMN REPELLED. BRITISH SUCCESS NEAR BAGDAD. TURKS' SERIOUS POSITION IN PERSIA Cairo, Janvary 27 There is much activity i n the Suez Canal. Troops and warships aro assembling. It is semi-officially stated that a reconnaissance inflicted severe losses on the Turks near Mezera. The British casualties were fifty. The Turks at Kantara opened fire with mountain-guns. The patrol Replied with machine-guns and rifles, and the Turks did not show a desire to come to close quarters. Small bodies of men at three other points cast of the Canal did not come into contact with the British troops. A hydroplane bombed a Turkish column at Birmur-Sadad, inflicting losses. The British casualties \;erc five.
