■ I. SOLDIERS' PENSIONS. HrviKi t , k _ ■ r > Dunedin, Yesterday. The Hon. James Allen met the committee of the Patriotic Association today. He said he bad replied before to the statement that legislation for pensions was not liberal enough, but would say as a general proposition it was the duty of the Government to make proper provisions for the widows and children of men killed at the front or who died from disease contracted ' at the front. The -Minister of Defence had power, in addition to a pension, to pay a lump sum down or a full year's pay, and further to pay every child a third of a full year's pay. He did not say that the sums provided were sufficient, but he could not say more till he bad consulted his coleagues than that it was the Government's busineas to make adequate provision.
