A "BLUFF" THAT FAILED. BRITISH CRUISER THREATENS ALEXANDRETTA. Times and Sydney Sim Services London, January 27. News has reached Damascus that a British cruiser is threatening the railway at Alexandretta. All British residents in Damascus were imprisoned and compelled to sign a telegram to the cap. tain of the cruiser stating that Britishers would be shot if any Moslems were killed by a bombardment. The captain reported that he would hold Djinel Pasha personally responsible for any harm to Britishers, who were thereupon released. RISKY CORRESPONDENCE. Timics and Sydney Sun Services. The Foreign Office warns Syrians that letters sent by relatives in the Ottoman Empire are opened by the Turkish censor, and when tliey express an opinion hostile to the present regime in Turkey the recipients are tried by military courts. Several sentences of fifteen years have been imposed.
