Trimble (chairman),) A. M. Bradbury, F. Mackay, E. Marfeli, J. Young, <_t. A. Adlam, and A. 11. Ilalcombe. Leave of absence was granted to Messrs A -Morton .and It. Masters, who arc engaged in the bowling tournament. AGRICULTURAL LECTURER. They recommended that Mr Sergei should be appointed to the position as from February Ist, 1915. The recommendation was adopted, and it was resolved that Mr H. G. Sergei be appointed instructor of Agriculture to the Technical College and to farmers' classes at a salary of £350 per annum and travelling expenses, as from February Ist, IMS. TEMPORARY APPOINTMENTS. The chairman reported that he had made the following temporary appointments, all dating from February Ist: Miss P. Gaustad, sole teacher, I'iko; Miss A. Brown, assistant, Pukeho; Miss M. Wilson, head teacher, Marco; Mrs B. Mills, head teacher, Pohokura; Miss L. Clemow, assistant, Stratford; Miss G. D. Shaw, sole teacher, Dudley; Miss C. Robertson,, sole teacher, Tahora; Miss J. Wallash, sole teacher, Musker's; Miss L. Williams, assistant, Central; Miss C. Lau, assistant, Tuna. TECHNICAL COLLEGE. On the recommendation of the Technical director, it was decided to grant John Cartwright free tuition for the year 1915 at the New Plymouth Technical College. In pursuance of his recommendation, the Technical director was authorised to expend the sum of £2O on clerical assistance. ■ This sum to be distributed among the senior scholars in return for work done. Mr W. G. Reid forwarded a resolution passed at a meeting of the Technical Advisory Board the previous evening to the effect that the Board of Education bo asked to take the neeessary steps to have the Technical Colloge placed under the board of managers, as provided by the new Act. I As the regulations have not yet been received, consideration was held over. FILLING VACANCIES. At last meeting, the inspectors suggested that in order to assist the Board's classification scheme, and to make it of th e fullest value, all vacan- ! cies should be advertised. In explanation, the Chief Inspector stated that this would amplify the classification scheme, as it would enable any teacliet of a similar grade, or of a higher grade, I to apply for a school, which for various [ reasons it would be convenient for them ,to accept, and of which they would otherwise have no opportunity, as the classification scheme mainly provided for promotion.

Members of the Board were then of the opinion that circularising would have the same result and would be cheaper, and the matter was held over.

At yesterday's meeting the matter was discussed, when the chief inspector (Mr Ballantvne) said tliat he had gone carefully into the matter of advertising as against circularising, and considered that the former had immense advantages. Circulars might not reach all the teachers, and, moreover, advertisements might induee outside teachers to apply and so introduce new blood into the district, many of the lower schools in which were now filled by inexperienced teachers. Some discussion took place, and it was finally resolved that the report should be adopted, and that the Taranaki Daily News and Herald should be the advertising media. MOHAKAU ROAD SCHOOL. Mr R. Masters Teported that he had been successful in getting Mr R. Todd to sell three acres of his land for school purposes at .C_'s per acre, and had also disposed of the existing site of ten acres at £lO per acre to Mr A. J. Stockley, of Kiore. As these were the conditions on which the Department had agreed to make a grant for the school, and as the children were at present being educated in a very old shearing shed, he hoped the Board would use their best endeavours to impress on the Department the urgency of this particular case. He also pointed out that the road from the station was an unmetalled one, end if the matter was allowed to stand over until winter, the cost of erection would be Increased. The report was adopted. PUNIWITAKAL" SCHOOL. Mr R. Masters reported that he had visited Puniwhakau and met the commissioners and also the lessees of the school grounds. It was agreed that the school should take two acres and leave the lessee eight acres. He recommended that the Board should bear the cost of a dividing fence. Tlit* report was adopted. OVERSEER'S REPOR'I. The overseer (Mr C. 11. Moore) reported that the new additions at the Bird school were about completed, and that everything would he ready for the opening next week. The new floor in the infants' school at Stratford and general repairs at the Technical School had been attended to. A tank had been fixed at the Radnor temporary school.

The ventilation at the Korito school should be greatly improved by the installation of the two ventiiating pivot sashes. The small pantry at Kaimata residence was about complete. The general repairs at Tarata Were receiving attention. The folding partition at the Technical College was almost completed. Part of the material for Musker's school was at Waitara ready to cart out, and he proposed starting work in a few days. for school buildings, grants bad been made as follows: Mokahau, new scliool, £•250; Warea, additions, £240.. THE TATARATMAKA SCHOOL. In response to the Board's application for additions to the Tataraimaka school, the Department wrote under date of December 23, that it appeared to the Department that the bridge cn the road to Oakura was probably by this time restored, and that there should therefore be no occasion to provide additional accommodation for children who had hitherto found it convenient to attend Oakura, where there was much spare room. On January 15th, the Education Board forwarded the Department a lettor enclosing a resolution from the Tarnnaki County Council to the effect that a new bridge would cost £4OO, and that such expenditure was not warranted, considering the small amount of traffic and the unsuitable site for such a bridge. The Board also urged the Department to reconsider the matter and make a grant for the additions applied for, pointing out that the parents of those children who formerly went to Oakura were in the Tataraimaka district and nearer that scliool, and were satisfied to allow their children to remain there. No reply bad yet been received from the Department. GENERAL. Mr .T. Christensen was appointed to the vacancy on the Ackland Scliool committee, caused by the resignation of 3lr A. Agent. . It was resolved to pay the Tataraimaka School Committee the sum of £2 towards flooring the shelter shed. The Education Department, notified that the Minister regretted that there was no immediate prospect of dealing with the large number of applications for expenditure on teachers' residences now before the Department. It was resolved to call applications for the position of assistant at the Board's office.

The Department notified that it could not undertake to supply a second flag to any school except on payment of cost..
