A JOCKEY SERIOUSLY HURT. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association.

Giaborne, Last Night. News was received in Gisborne tonight that F. C. Porter, a well-known jockey, was seriously injured when riding Lady Oldwyn in the Maiden Hack Scurry at the Wairoa races to day. Porter was a well-known Gisborne trainer, but went back to the pig-skin last November. He has showed up prominently this season, riding several winners in the South Island. No hope is entertained for his recovery, tlumglv a Gisborne doctor has been sent for to hold a consultation. There are no details here as to how the accident occurred. RAILWAY WORKER KILLED. {

Auckland, Last Night. Fatal injuries were sustained by James Porter, a carpenter in the employ of, the New Zealand Government railways, I who fell from a signal post yesterday! Afternoon at Henderson. Another car- 1 penter, named Thos Anderson, had a narrow escape from a similar fate. The accident occurred through a shunting train striking one of the ropes which Jield in position the gear used in erecting the signal post, causing it to col-1 lapse. Anderson hung to the post, but Porter fell a distance of thirty feet, fracturing his right thigh and sustaining severe injuries to the spine. KILLED BY MOTOR CAR

Timaru, Last Night. Ephraim Griffiths, aged 63, a retired farmer of Hilton, and living at Timaru, was killed by a motor car at Temuka to-day He was leaving Ternuka for the railway station, and in the station yard, J. Wright, a farmer, came up behind in a car. He sounded the horn, and deceased seemed to hew it as lie stepped to the left out of the way. Then he suddenly stepped to the right, in front of the car, which was too near to avoid an accident. Griffiths was struck by the off wheel of the car which passed over him.
