BOWLING.
! THE TARANAKI TOURNAMENT, f A SUCCESSFUL OPENING. I Fine watlier greeted the opening of 1 the tenth annual tournament under the auspices of the Taranaki Bowling Association, which took place yesterday. Owing to the large increase in the number of entries —48 rinks having entered, as against 32 last year—it is found necessary to utilise three greens, am! accordingly the tournament is being played on the New Plymouth, Fitzroy, anil Inglewood greens,, all of which are in good condition, and give evidence of careful preparation by their respective caretakers The competitors are divided into six sections, two of which occupy each green. A daily change of venue will be made, so that every team will play on each green. Of the 48 entrants, all but one are competing, Ponsonbv being the sole defection. In one section, therefore, there is a bye. This is the first occasion on which the tournament has been thrown open, consequently there, are several prominent bowlers competing who are new to Taranaki tournaments. This, of course, adds interest to the play. This open-door
policy, combined with the continued and increased enthusiasm of the local clubs, fully accounts for the record entry. Eleven Taranaki clubs are represented with 38 rinks, the only absentee being Patea. New Plymouth and Fitzroy have six rinks each; Hawera, Inglewood, and Stratford, four each; Pihama, West End, and Waitara, three each; Opunake, and Eltham, two each; and Manaia, one. The outside rinks number eight, and comprise: Gonville (Wanganui), three; St. .Tohn's (Wanganui), two; and Waverley, three. There was some fine play shown yesterday on all the greens. Early in the morning the greens played rather fieavy, owing to the rain of the night previous, hut as the, day progressed they became very keen. There were some very close
finishes, an extra head being necessary to decide on three or four occasions. There were also some runaway wins, but the prospects on the whole are for keen contests to decide the various sec-tion-winners. The Association, through its indefatigable secretary, Mr. O. N. Firth, had made complete arrangements for the conduct of the tournament, and everything went off smoothly. The umpires were Messrs. A. E. Watkins (New Plymouth), W. E. Pcreival (Inglewood), and A. S. Brooker (Fitzroy). They had some close measures to decide, in one case a tie being awarded. Their decisions, however,
were never questioned. Prior to the commencement of the matches the bowlers engaged at New Plymouth and Fitzroy assembled on the former green, where they were welcomed by the president of the Association, Mr. W. J. Penn. It was particularly gratifying, lie said, to welcome clubs from outside Taranaki Centre, and especially their old friends from Wavreley, who had been cut out of the Centre. He expressed his regret that Ponsonbv had been unable to visit Taranaki. Referring to the conditions of play, lie stated that the committee would not adhere to the '"two feet on the mat" rule, which he felt certain would be doomed when a plebiscite of
bowlers was taken on the question. Referring to the method of playing off section tics, he said that if there were only two, they would probably be included with the final winners, leaving eight to play off. That, however, would be decided on Wednesday evening. The results of the section play arc as follows: SECTION A. (New Plymouth Green)
