COLONIAL SOLDIER INSULTS TURKISH WOMAN. PAYS THE PENALTY WITH HIS LIFE By Telegraph—Per Press Association.
Christchureli, Last Night. Brief reference is made in a letter from a Christchurch member of the New | Zealand expeditionary force now m Egypt to a tragic occurrence as the result of which, apparently, a member of the Australian portion of the force met his death. Extracts from the letter dealing with the matter »re as follows: "Some of our fellows have been most indiscreet, and one of them tore the veil off a Turkish woman's face and paid! the penalty. He was found in the: streets of Cairo with his throat cut." ) ! In a subsequent letter written to an-j other person, referring to the same inci-' dent, the same writer says: "His body I now lies in the Australian camp." From i -this reference it is assumed that the! [victim of his own foolishness was aj J member of the Australian section of the expeditionary force. The same writer says that the military authorities are very strict in the matter of the men obtaining intoxicants Cases have occurred of men who have indulged too freely in liquor being decoyed j into the side streets. Anyone found under jthe influence of intoxicants is very i severely dealt with.
