WELLINGTON'S JUBILEE.
SOME NOTABLE UTTERANCES. Wellington, January 23. The jubilee entertainment at the Town Hall to-night was presided over by Mr. ,T. E. .Jenkinson, who, before making some remarks appropriate, to the occasion, stated that the following telegram had been received from Dr. MeXah, M.P.: "Regret I cannot be with you to-day to celebrate the diamond jubilee of the old high treason settlement honored by the illustrious name of Wellington, who humbled the tyrant of Europe and dictated a fifty years' peace to the antions of the Continent. Now, on the centenary of that event, and on its diamond jubilee, another Wellington is humbling another tyrant, and let us hope is dictating a thousand years of peace to the nations of the <>M World. May your city prove worthy of such a name, and such a jubilee." (Applause.) In the course <>f his remarks. Mr. JenkiiKnii said that a hug.' debt of gratitude was due to those early settler,whn had founded a nation far removed from the present seat of war. Were it not for what thev had done the people of New Zealand 'would probably be in the midst of all the stress and strain that was going on in llritain. No doubt victorv would be granted to the Allies in go'od time, wlii.-li could be looked forward to for the fulfilment of the bo|ie expressed in Dr. McNab's telegram. In conclusion, the chairman mentioned that present in the hall was Mr. TCogcrs. the first white man born in Wellington, after 1840. "".': ;
