Dr. Friedlander is medical officer to the battalion, which consists of 1052 men.

His wife is a daughter of an ex-Mavor of Dunedin, Mr. W. Burnett.

Sydney papers just to hand record the sudden dentil of Captain W. H. Steele, of the London Missionary steam yacht John Williams, at the age of thirty-seven. Captain Steele only arrived in Sydney from a long and arduous voyage to the South Seaa on December 27th. For some time past he had suffered from attacks of malaria. One day he complained of feeling unwell, and was found to be suffering from a bad attack of pneumonia, from which he died. The late Captain Steele had been in the John Williams for nearly fifteen years, for nine years of which he was an officer, and held command during the past six years.

*¥i' - ar °M Vincent Rowe, second soil of Mr. F. W. Rowe, a well-known Christchurch solicitor (and at one time publiclibrarian in Wellington) has been advised that he has been awarded a research scholarship at Canterbury College, the value of which is £IOO per annum for two years. Mr. Rowe is in his twenty-first year and received his early education at the Clyde Quay school* Wellington, and at the East Christchurch school At the end of 1904 ho gained an entrance scholarship at Christ's College and also a junior Education Board's Scholarships. At Christ's College he gained in succession two junior Somes scholarships, and in December, 1910, he obtained a senior national scholarship. He entered Canterbury College in 1912, and gained an exhibition in chemistry the following year. He com pleted his B.A. degree and gained a Haydon Prize in chejnistry at Canterbury College and a senior university scholarship in chemistry. Mr. Rowe recently sat for his M.A. degree.
