WELLINGTON SUMMER MEETING. OPENING DAY. PAVLOVA WINS THE CUP. By Telegraph.-—Per Press Association Wellington, Last Night. The summer meeting of the Wellington Racing Club opened at Trentham today in perfect weather, and with a large attendance. The course was on the hard side, and several records were established. The Cup was won by Pavlova, which beat Indigo, the favorite, by a short head, and lowered the New Zealand record for a mile and a half by two-fifths of a second, the distance being accomplished in 2min 32sec. Records for the course were put up by Taringamutu ill winning the Nursery Handicap, of five furlongs, in lmin 0 2-ssec., and by Hoy, who won the Telegraph Handicap, of six furlongs, in lmin 13sec. The totalisator investments amounted to £40,1113 10s, as against £31,420 on the corresponding day last year, and were a record for the first day of the summer meeting. A feature of the gathering was a parade of 4000 Territorials from the reinforcement camp. Results: TRENTIIAM WELTER HANDICAP, of 150 sovs. One mile.—3 Jem, 9.13 (B. Deelcy), 1; 1 Black All, 8.10( R.
