METHODIST QUARTERLY MEETING.
i DECAY OF SUNDAY OBSERVANCE. The quarterly meeting of Methodists in the New Plymouth Circuit was held in the Whiteley schoolroom on Tuesday evening. The Rev. A. B. Chappell, M.A., .presided over a good attendance, which included the Rev. C. H, Olds, B.A. The membership returns were regarded as satisfactory. The financial statement showed an increase in the circuit's indebtedness. After full discussion a scheme for increasing the revenue was adopted, failing which it was felt that it might be necessary to review the whole position of pastoral oversight and supply of country services. The retiring circuit steward (Mr. C. Carter) and his colleague (Mr. 8.. Pepper ell) were thanked for efficient service in the past, and Messrs. R. Pepperell and W. P. Short were unanimously elected to the circuit stewardship.
The following were elected representatives to conference (to be held next month at Cliristchurch): —Messrs. R. Pepperell and F. Morshead; substitutes, Messrs. Barnett and W. Chatterton. The neglect of Sunday observance, alluded to by a lay member of the meeting, brought forth a resolution deploring the disregard of the Christian Sunday, as evidenced by the number of picnics and concerts held, and the amount of sport indulged in on that day, and protesting, in the interests of the young people especially, against such desecration of the day Bet apart for rest and worship.
