ARISING OUT OF A QUEER COMPETITION. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association,' Timaru, Last' Night. The first fatality on the Caroline Baybathing sands occurred this afternoon. Two brothers, aged eight and six yeannamed Bartley, whose father is employed at Islington, were bathing with a number of others off the rubble mole, when they were observed to befloating with their heads under watertoo long. Other boys fetched then out, and medical aid was procured. Theelder was past recovery but the younger" was brought round after an hour's work,. They were not beyond their depth, and it is stated that the two boys wengoing to see which could hold thelfhcad under the water longest. '■
