New Plymouth Harbor
(' ANNUAL REPORT. 'Gentlemen, — I have j;reat pleasure in placing before vou i'lio accounts of the Board for the ' year 1914, and ill doing so would draw ' the members' attention to the very ' satisfaeis;!-y increase in the trade o" the port, the cargo handed in 11)14 being ' 10&370 tons, as against 92.407 toni in ' 1013, the increase being 15,803 tons, or a little over 17 per cent. 'l'he revenue received during the yea; was £13.2-10 Mis 3d, against £12,033 2s '2d in Wl3, an increase of £383 14s 3d; ' and 'iJie working account shows a net ' profit of £!X>54 lis 4d. against- £S97O 9s ' Oil in 191.1. l' The total ordinary revenue received in |' the general account by the Board for thi ; 'past 10 years is as follows:
LOAN IACCOrXT. The balance of this account at December 31, 1914, was £13,570 16s 7d, which is at present on fixed deposit at the Board's banker-. BREAKWAT ICR PROTECTION*. The protection work at the Breakwater has stood splendidly during the year, and the very small sum of £9 12s Id only has been expended on the work_ Seven concrete blocks were used in the apron, and there are still 77 on hand. WHARF LIGHTING. During the year the Board, finding the lighting on the wharf not altogether satisfactory, decided to make improvements by increasing and re arranging the electric lights. This has been done, and is now giving great satisfaction. The cost of the work, which was done partly by contract and partly by the Board's staff, was £241 Os 6d.
I DREDGE 'THOMAS KIN': ] During the year this dredger was laid ! up for over three months, undergoing a very extensive overhaul, the principal work being internal repairs to the hull and a new deck. The vessel is now in t very good condition, and ought not to require very much spent on her during the ensuing 12 months. In consequence > of this overhaul the vessel has not re- ! moved as much material as the previous year, the quantity for 1914 being I 91,680 tons, and the average cost per ton has increased to 7.07 d, this being caused by the amount spent in overhauling the vessel, £1491 lis 7d being added to the expenses. Particulars of sand removed from the harbor during the past sixteen years by the Thomas King:
DREDGE •' I'ARITUTU." Most of tin; year this vcssul lias been engaged dredging inshore witli the buckets, removing 184,400 tons from there, and the balance of the time she was sand-putnping in the fairway, from which she removed 110,800 tons, making a total of 295,200 tons for the year. The cost of the vessel for the year, including the annual overhaul at Wellington, which was very heavy this year ( C27!l"> 9s) was £10,332 17s S>d, which gives an average cost per ton of material removed of 8.40 d per ton. Tile dredger has really done splendid work during the year, its she was working for tile greater part of the time in very hard formation. The deep-water berth has been completed, and a further large area has been dredged. The swinging l>a<in, which was demanded by the shipping companies before they would agree, to send their ships here, and the fairway, are both now Hearing completion. Particulars of dredging by the I'avitutu for the past four years:—
WHAIU'. During tlie year a fair amount of repairs have been June to Hie wharf, including tlie driving of renewal pihin the west Hide. Tlie expenditure tinder this heading has been CfiTa las 3d.
IUIILDING, PLANT, MACIIIN T IOIIY. The locomotive shed, smithy and store-room mentioned in my last report were eompleted during the early part of the year. The waterside workers' shed on the wharf was shifted to a new site on the side of the breakwater and eleetri light installed, a fireplace built, ami washing convenience erected, which makes the place much more comfortable for the men when awaiting the arrival of steamer-, especially during the winter months. The expenditure under the above heading has been XOSfi 13s 0.1, and the sales of old plant ami material have amounted to £73 •>* fid for the year. KXOOWMRXTS.
During the year the unlet portions of Kawau I'a Reserve were put up for public, competition, but only one section was sold. Four of the Mi. Eilnt TCeserve ha-i s expired during l"i-l. f'v.-i of v'lici: werrenewed at, higher rentals. while t■■ other two are still under consideration. further small mums ha.\v been on the Bell Block Reserve in an endeavor (o reclaim and «!ra*s the sand waste
The increase for the year under t'liis 'heading hem™ £oSS. SHIPPING. Three hundred and four vessels entered and left the port during the past year, their aggregate tonnage being 160,810 tons. The first large direct ocean liner to visit 'New Plymouth was the s.s. Walkuro, from Hull, which was safely berthed at the wharf in June last Tiie Walkure, which was a turret-built vessel of 3535 tons, with a draught ef 221't Sin. carried a cargo of 4998 ions, all of which was landed at the port, in a first-class condition, which is in marked contrast to the usual condition of goods transhipped here from other ports The whole cargo was landed in 64 working hours. 'Returns for the past thirteen years are as follows:
Being a decrease of 28 vessels, of l(i,!)2i] in tonnage, and an increase, of f.'),B()S tons in imports and exports. It will be seen that the figures for imports and exports are both records for the port. LAND REVENUE. The land revenue received during the year amounted to £4(>St> 17s :!d. as against ,-€4(167 13s 4d in 11)13. an increase of £l9 3s lid. The revenue received during the past few years is considerably less than was • estimated by the Under-Secretary for Lands when the loan was raised. The decrease is caused by the. different construction being put on the wording of the Act. A claim was made during the year on the Board for a large sum of money, which, it was stated, had been over-paid to the Board in the past. Representations were made by the Board to the (lorernmcnt, and it was shown conclusively that the Board had been misled by statements made to members at tlie time, the loan was raised, and Parliament agreed to waive the claim Table of land revenue fnr the past sixteen years:—
