TARANAKI TENNIS TOURNAMENT.
SECOND DAY'S PLAY. SOME FINE MATCHES. , The second day of the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association's annual tournament was productive of some fine play at the New Plymouth Club's courts yesterday. The weather was again favorable, though in the morning the wind proved, at times rather baffling. The courts played very truly throughout the day, and were very seldom idle. The games were rapidly pushed through, but some of them, notably championship events, were very closely and hotly contested in lengthy matches. Play will need to be pushed ahead very expeditiously if finality is to be reached in all events to-day. There were some great contests, one of the finest being in the championship men's doubles between Powdrell Bros, and Dickie and Wallace. In the iirst two sets the former fully extended the champion.-., and some line volleying and smashing .v. iv witnessed. Advantage sets were played, :i:id in the first set finality was not re:u ' ' until twenty games had In en ■ '.a.vi-il. ■ u Dickie and Wallace gained the :raey.- In the second set tlie rlisu.ti!i were leading 5-<l, but l'owdrell n-'o ;.. : 'eying well, gained the r.cxt three iin :k1 the set. The final set fell <•> ki" '"ul Wallace, who oatgcneral'i ' i e' opponents, and won, 8-1. In f' • ■'■ inbined championships, Webster • " .Vfiss Gorric were run to three sei Dr. Fookcs and Miss L. Thompson. In the ladies' championship doubles, Misses Simpson completed their unfinished match with Misses Thomson, and won with little to spare. There were some great tussles in the ladies' championship singles, In which Miss G. Gorrie beat Miss D. Simpson in two sets, both of which the New Plymouth lady carried to 0-5, Miss Gorrie also beat Miss E. Horner, a young Patca player, who should niake a name for herself in tennis circles, after three hard sets. Miss Gorrie and Miss Brewster should fight out the final of this event. In the men's singles, Nicholson accounted for Wallace in two straight sets rather easily, the first set being a love set. Wallace was hardly up to form, and. Nicholson, playing a fine length, kept him away from the net.
All the leading players remain in the finals, and to-day's matches should produce some groat tennis, as tlie ehampions are showing improved form as the tournament progresses.
