IMPERIAL DEFENCE.

FEDERAL PREMIER'S VIEWS ENDORSED. AUSTRALASIAN INTERDEPENDENCE.

By Cable -Press Association —Copyright, j Sydney, January 13. | The Herald, in a leader, discussing Mr A. Fisher's interview in New Zealand regarding Imperial defence, says that the war has proved conclusively that in naval all'airs any want of co-operation between Australia and New.Zealand must he disastrous to both, to Australia because it diminishes the number of ships wherewith she can co-operate in trading and manoeuvres and deprives her of' valuable, assistance; and it was unsuitable to New Zealand because in war time she leaves her coasts dependent

on assistance from neighbours. Referring (o Mr Fisher's wish to hold an Imperial conference in 1015, the Herald deprecates holding the conference at present, maintaining that it could settle nothing, and discussion would bo worse than useless and would only add

to the burdens which already harass Im-p-rial Ministers The paper endorses Mr Massoy's contention that the place for Dominion Prime Ministers at present is iu their own countries. They can atJ least do less harm there than abroad.
