I Lord Harding*-, Viceroy of India, xn a speech to the Legislative Council, said il:tt Enver Pas : i.-i under German c.!h-' r.;ils*oii betrayed Islam's ' interest', and abdicated the sov.jrigmty of -Turk-jy to the hands of Germans, When the char_ aria of the rn.i;'ve;i of the war wa. k.iwii any rei: for Indian Moslems v trli! have beefi swept aside by the feeling of unswerving loyalty to tlio Empire. A towering wave of patriotism swept India from shore to slioie. This was one of Germany's miscalculations. India had dispatched or was dispatching enough troops on the frontier to meet any emergency. That India was able to do this was a supreme mark of his absolute confidence in the fidelity of the troops and the loyalty of the people, in whom his confidence was daily more justified. He appealed to the Council not to discuss controversial questions. It was a time for all minds to find protection in tile Empire. The only feeling prominent was the necessity for united action to conquer the common enemy.
