Wellington, January )•'!. i The fnilowing particulars are auiil- , able concerning the Te lloro fatal.ly, by which Herbert Hodge and his soil 'Alfred lost their lives, it appears that '.\lessrs Hodge, who are well-known well-to-do fanners in the Te lloro district,
were netlishing in company with Mr Udv, of Wairarapa, on Monday evening. Shortly alter 8 o'clock, when it was nearer' dark tfian dusk, they were dragging in the net. Udy was on the beach ami the Hodges were up to their necks in water, as owing to the rapidly shelving beach, the net had to be lifted as I well as dragged. Udy heard a cry, but took it to be a signal to haul away
from the men whose heads lie eould see above water in the gathering gloom. I Later, looking to sea, he missed them. He called out and rushed to the water's edge, but could see nothing. He tlien reported the matter to the police. The j beach is well-known to be infested by big ground "sharks this summer and it | is thought that they were attacked and I dragged under.
THE INQUEST. Wellington, Last Night. An inquest was held to-day at Te Horo on the body of Herbert Hodge, who was drowned on Monday evening while fishing of! the beach. Deceased had evidently been seized by a shark, as one arm was almost bitten through and the body was disfigured. A verdict of "accidentally drowned" was returned.
