Udy was on the beach ami the Hodges were up to their necks in water, as owing to the rapidly shelving beach, the net had to be lifted as I well as dragged. Udy heard a cry, but took it to be a signal to haul away

from the men whose heads lie eould see above water in the gathering gloom. I Later, looking to sea, he missed them. He called out and rushed to the water's edge, but could see nothing. He tlien reported the matter to the police. The j beach is well-known to be infested by big ground "sharks this summer and it | is thought that they were attacked and I dragged under.

THE INQUEST. Wellington, Last Night. An inquest was held to-day at Te Horo on the body of Herbert Hodge, who was drowned on Monday evening while fishing of! the beach. Deceased had evidently been seized by a shark, as one arm was almost bitten through and the body was disfigured. A verdict of "accidentally drowned" was returned.
