McKenzie, addressing the New Zcalanders at Cairo, said Lord Kitchener had sent them to Egypt for the purposes of training and of guarding the Canal, which some called the greatest link of the Imperial chain. He paid a special tribute to the London contingent, and said the splendid New Zealand force quite fulfilled Lis prophecy made at the late ()ueen Victoria's celebrations, that if the Empire were ever threatened, New Zcalanders would stand shoulder to shoulder with the soldiers of the Motherland.
