MONTHLY MEETING. 1 The usual monthly meeting of theSociety for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held in the Town Hall yesterday. There were present: Mr. F. W, fiandfonl (chairman), Rev. Colvile, Messrs. Paton, R. C. Hughes (secretary),. Mesdames '.A. Robertson, F. Messenger, and Colvile. Mrs. Matthews forwarded, an apology for her absence. A financial statement showed a balance in hand of £l2 Os >lltl. Accountswere passed for payment for £3 18s. It was decided to make.an energetic canvass for subscriptions, and utilise the services of the inspector in this direction. • The inspector, Mr. Collins, attended the meeting, and handed in his report. Mr. J. E. Wilson (Mayor) wrote to the effect that he had received informal tion of instances of cruelty to horses along the coast, and suggested that the inspector he instructed to go as far as Opunake, and attend the stock sales at Rahotu and Stony River. The eases mentioned were of working horses with sore backs, and leaving stock in yards without water. His Worship will bo thanked for his letter, but the society regrets that, owing to lack of funds, it is unable to incur the expense of sending the inspector down the const. The secretary reported that he had written to the Wellington S.P.C.A., enquiring what provision was made in their district for the watering of pigs and cattle on transit. The secretary stated that he _ had written to Colonel Cosgrove, Dominion Scoutmaster, asking him to confirm the action of Mrs. Gault in handing the balance of the Tnglewood Girls* Scout Fund (.£2 8s) to the sopiety.
