The Observatore Romano says the reports of Cardinal Mercier's arrest are not exact, but the Pope is dissatisfied wirli the German Government's statements hi the Belgians and displeased with the attitude of the Catholic Press, which refuses to rectify the inaccurate German statements.
OFFICIAL NEWS. lIIGII C((MM ISSIOXBR'S REPORT. Wellington, January 11. The High Commissioner reports under date London, January 10, 7.20 p.m.: Paris reports t.lut in the Aisiir region round Soissons the enemy, notwithstanding numerous attacks, was unable to retake, trendies lost. In the Champagne region, from Rheims to the Argonnes, the French artillery fired with great effect on the German trenches, dispersing parties of marksmen, and positions were captured. At Perthes an organised German counter-attack was repelled. In the outskirts of Beausejonr ground was gained in the west and a redoubt seized in the north. The Prime Minister has received the following from the High Commissioner, dated London, January 11th:— "Paris reports that in the Champagne district German counter-attacks north of Perthes and north of Beaujour wore repulsed. In Argonne, two small German attacks at Fontaine, Madame, and St. Hubert failed.
A lively fusilade occurred west of Housailles, and on the Mcurissons The remainder of the front is quiet, stream.
