WAR NOTES.
LANDSTURM SECOND LINE. j 'According to the press of Paris, fier- j many lias called up the second-class Landsturm, and this is taken as "a sure proof that her immense reservoir of men is slowly diminishing." The Landsturm, which has now in part been sent abroad, is in theory organised for hom» defence only. Its second-class contain only mid-dle-aged men. All Germans belong to the Landsturm sooner or later. The first-class, or "ban," contains men from 17 to 39 years old who have not undergone military training. They are liable to be called to the colors in case of need. Early in the war 1,300,000 of such Germans were said to have volunteered for service at the front. The second-class, or ban, contains all men between 3:i and 4.">, whether they have been trained or not. Tt> call up the whole of this class would mean that all Germany's male population up to 45 years old had been ordered under arms. If only the 30-4") men of previous military training bad been called, the order is less significant. They would not number more than a few hundred thousand. Between the ages of IS and 4.") there are about 11.000,000 men in Germany. That is the full capacity of her "re-ervoir of men."
