The Ri'V. Neville Bamett, at present I curate of St. Paul's, Wellington, lias j 'bten appointed Vicar ol Pa tea. Mr J. S. MeKellar, who underwent a serious operation on Thursday, is progressing as well as can be expected. A Melbourne message states that Mr Appleton lias been re-elected .president of the Australian Steamship Owners' Association. Mr U. J. Eamc-s, who is wel] known in newspaper circles in Taranaki, has been appointed managing editor of the Northern Advocate, published at Whangarei. Mr J. 0. llarkness, secretary of the National Dairy Association, and a member of the Wellington Harbour Board, left by the Mamma on a business trip to the United States and Canada. Mi D. N. MacDiarmid, organising secretary of the Soudan United Mission, who has been spending some time with his 'people at New Plymouth, 'has left m order to visit Wanganui, Napier and other parts of New Zealand, after which he will return to Melbourne.
A 'Melbourne cablegram states that trouble lias arisen between the Minister of External Allah's and Mr Deakin, in reference -to the latter acting as Commonwealth representative at the Panama Exhibition. There arc indications that Mr Deak'.n will not till the mission,
The death occurred on Thursday of Mr Thomas Giddy, of Lepperton, who had been ill for a short time, and took a serious turn for the worse on Thursday n orning. Dr Brewster, who was summoned, decided to 'bring him in to tile New Plymouth Hospital but, during the. ii'otor journey, at between twelve and one o'clock, he suddenly eollapsed,_ and became unconscious, dying almost simultaneously with his arrival at the Hospital.
Another of the band of Ota-go's pioneer women, Mrs Matthew Marshall, died at her residence, North Balclutlia, early on Sunday morning, at the age of 77 years (says an exchange). She was born iu Edinburgh in 1837, and came to New Zealand in the slhip Larkins in 1849, settling with her mother and -brothers in Dunedin. Mrs Marshall married in Dunedin in 1857. Five days after the marriage she and her husband set out for their home, a 10-acre section at Aherturf, and alter residing there for some time went to Hilknd, where they farmed for 40 years, afterwards going to Balclutlia. The deceased lady could tell many a good tale of the tribulations of the early pioneers. Mr Marshall predeceased his wife h\- about two years and a half. The late' Mrs Marshall leaves a grown-up family of four daughters anil two sons. Tliev arc*: Mrs Hueh Christie (Balclutlia), Mrs J. IT. Wylie (Doufflas. Taranaki). Miss M. Marshall (Balehithal, Mrs T. Allen (Dunedin), Frank Marshall (Martinborough), and Matthew Marshall (Masterton).
Mr. Ponltney Bigelow, the author, who has warned America against quarrelling with "England over tradj restrictions (luring the war, is a well-known American. Tie was born in New York in 1855, is an M.A. of Yale, ami was admitted to the American aßr in 1882. In 1875-7fi he made a trip round the world in a sailing ship. Tie has visited New Guinea and Japan, travelled in China, "Borneo, Java, Australia, Africa, the West Indies, on the Spanish "Main, in the Philippines, and Panama, and studied tropical colonisation in nearly every colony of the world. He has lectured at the principal universities on modern history and colonial administration. In 1898 he acted as correspondent for the London Times during ' the Spanish-American War. His books include "The German Emperor and His Eastern Neighbors," "Paddles and Policies down the Danjibe," (lie was the. first to take a canoe through the. Iron Gates of the Danubel, "The Borderland of Tsar and Kaiser," "Historv of the German struggle for Liberty'' (four volumes), "White Men's Africa," and "Children of the Nation." "Most of these have been translated into German or "French. Mr. Bigelow was expelled from Russia in 1802 on account of his political writings.
