HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE. Wellington, Yesterday. The High Commissioner reports under date London, January 5, f1.40 p.m.:— Paris reports that the Allies' infantry progressed on the dunes facing Nieuport. In the region of St. Georges they won at different points 200, 300, and 500 metres of ground, carrying houses and trench formations. From the Lvs to the Oise, west of Lens, the enemy's sapping works have stopped, owing to the French mortars and grenades. On the Lille road the Germans exploded a trench and seized it. All immediate counter-attack reinstated the Allies. In the valley of Suippes the regions of Perthes, Beau Sejour, the Argonnes, and the heights of the Mouse the bombardment by the batteries was successful. The High Commissioner reports:— London, January G, 12.30 a.m. Petrograd reports that the Russians in Uzok Pass captured an Austrian detachment, taking ten officers and 450 men. Near Sara Kamyslf the Russians completely defeated two Turkislx corps. One porps commander, three chiefs of divisions and their staffs were captured.
