STREETS AND TRAMWAYS.
. I To the Editor, ; Sir, —I notice that the city fathers of our esteemed town are making a starii with the installation of electric driven trams on the sides-of the town streets. I"rom constant enquiries made I find that no matter how narrow a street is or how sharp a bend around a corner, no effort is to be made to widen streets or taper off corners. Take, for instance, the corner opposite the Terminus Ilotel, and I suppose there arc others as bad, although I must sav this corner is too sharp for any town. If :Xcw Plymouth ever wakes up and shakes off its Tory slumber, and becomes a thickly-populated town, X rather fancy that these corners will be a menace to the town which has a rural population around it. Then, sir, follow i* your mind's eye the narrow road from the Terminus Hotel to, say, near the 'West End School. Imagino a tram line on each side of the road and traffic to and fro of waggons, motor vehicles, and •country people in traps driving. Why not widen this Toad now and cater for the increased population of the town? With its great potentialities this place is surely not going to stand still. It cost the Wellington City Council thousands of pounds to widen its streets through an inadequate town planning system made years ago. We will have the same thing happen here in future years. It will cost comparatively lit- ' tie to have it done now before people build up-to-date residences and property becomes dearer. Thanking you for the insertion of the above, arid hoping the councillors are not yet committed to narrow streets and sharp corners.— I am, etc., DAK J.'HUGHES,
