NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. Christchurch, Friday. Fifth round. —Dodds v. Barm's (two kniglits defence) —P>y sacrificing two pawns Barnes worked up a powerful attack, ami Dodds resigned at move. 2(i j when mate was threatened. j Hill v. Puckctt (liny Lopez)—Hill developed his frame nicely. Buckett, fret- ' ting pressed for time, overlooked the loss of his queen at move 17, and immediately resigned. C. K. Fox v. Orierson (queen's gambit deelined) —Fox fell into a well-known trap on the (Itli move, losing a knight for a pawn, Orierson, however, did not make the most of his opportunities, and, a draw was agreed to on the .'l7th move. Mara v. Hicks (centre counter game) —Mara sacrificed the exchange (rook for a knight) for an attack, which Hicks staved oil', and won on the 4(!th move. Pleasant' v.. Severne (Buy Lopez) Pleasants continued with the p.q.3 variation, but did not make the most of his game. Severne's second move forced the win of a piece, and Pleasant resigned forthwith. B. G. Fox v. Moore—Moore scored by default. Kflling a bye. The following adjourned games were completed:—Grierson v., Ke.lling' (round 1) —Celling won on the 02nd move. Mara v. Dodds (round 2) —M'ara won on the (i7th -move. Sixth round.—Hills v. Dodds (VSuy Lopez)—Dodds osfc two pawns through overnight, and subsequently the exchange of a rook for a bishop, leaving Hill a winner at move 49. Buckett v. 'Kelling (Carokann)' —An interesting game, unfinished. Severne v. Hicks (centre counter garni')— Hicks developed an attack, forcing Severne to give up a pawn, and scored a win on the 03rd move. Moore v. C. E. Fox (Ruy Lopez)—Fox missed the opportunity of winning the exchange, and the game ended in a draw on the 31st move. Pleasants v. Mara (Ruy Lopez)—lfcva gave up a bishop for two pawns for an attack, which Pleasants defended weakly, mid his resignation was forced at move 51. Barnes v. B. G. Fox—Karens scored by default. WAYERLIOY CHAMPIONS BEATEN. Bunodin, Last Night. The Xcw Zealand Lawn Tennis championship concluded to-day in perfect weather. In the final men's singles, Ollivier proved too good for Jennings who did not play up to his best form after the first set. The final for the men's doubles was stubbornly contested, and ran to five sets, the match lasting two hours and a quarter. Wallace and Dickie won the first set by fine, steady play, but Ollivier and Wilding equalised matter. In the second and third set, Ollivier and Wilding went away with a strei.g lead, the scores at one time standing s—l in their favour. Wallace and Dickie piayed pluekily and well, and von five games in succession. They scored alternately until the figures read 8-all, but Ollivier and Wilding won the next two and set. In the fourth set Wallace led 5—2, but Ollivier crept up and made the figures 5-all. The Taranaki pair, however, won the next two and set. Ollivier and Wilding won the fifth set rather easily. The final of the ladies' singles provided a fine contest, hut Miss Gray proved superior. Both she and Miss Baird played splendidly. Ross and Miss Baird won the combined doubles rather easily. Both showed to better advantage than their opponents. The banner was won by Canterbury with 12J points, Auckland •second with 5i points, and Hawke's Bay third with 3 points. Results: <Men's Singles.—Ollivier beat Jennings, 4—;">. fi—4, o—4, o—l. Men's Doubles.—Ollivier and Wilding bent Wallace and Dickie, (i—B, G—3, 10—8, 5—7, 6—2. Ladies' Singles.—Miss Gray beat Miss Baird, 4—G. fi—3, o—4. Combined Doubles. —Goss and Miss Baird beat Jennings and Miss Brewster, 0-3, 7—5. WELLINGTON TOURNAMENT. Wellington, Last Night. The Wellington provincial tennis championships were continued at Day's Bay yesterday, but owing to the delay on' the previous day through drizzling rain in the morning, the matches are still very .backward, hardly any yet reaching the semi-final stage. These will be reached and the tournament concluded, it is hoped, next Saturday.
