The game will be resumed on Monday. SOUTH v. NORTH TARANAKX AN EASY WIN" FOR SOUTH. The ma teb between VortTt and South Taranaki was concluded at Hawcra on Saturday morning in ideal cricketing weather, the wind, which was troublesome, on the previous day, having completely died away. North Taranaki, requiring 133 runs to avert an innings defeat, failed to do anything with the bowling of Penny and Ongley, losing seven wickets for -13 runs. A great rally by Matthews, however, improved the situation, the innings closing for 89. Thus North Taranaki suffered defeat by an innings and 44 runs.
Matthews played well, punishing anything loose with his usual severity. Twice he drove the leather over the fence. Unfortunately, no one was able to stay with him. and he retired unbeaten for 37 .
The umpires were Messrs. Osborne and Roves.
The visitors wore hospitably entertained liy the loeal Association, who will probably return tlie visit later in the season.
Richards and Monleath opened to the bowling of Ongley and Penny. The former bowled a maiden, one log-bye being scored. Kneh batsman found the boundary in Ponnv's over, Montcath just raising 'it (i. but 'he lifted the last ball to Staplotoh, who held it. 10—1 Stewart opened vilh a e„t to the boundary off Ongley. Path batsmen were batting eiinlidently and running smartly between the wiekels. The seore mounted up slowly by singles. Piohards poked one up from Ongley towards midwicket, and Blamire-. running from behind the stumps, got up in time to effect a. fine one-handed catch. IS--"2—5. Singles to McOie and Stewart oIT Ongley brought 20 up. Stewart scored two couples, and then Pennv heat hiin with a slow break. "2-!—." l-'l. Osborne joined Medio, and runs came slowly, each of three overs producing one to each batsman, and making the seore 3d. Osborne scored two singles and a couple off Onglev, and was then smartlv caught bv Pratt at point off the same bowler. 34—4—r>. McGie was hatting well, but the good fielding made vmi-siettinc difficult until :\feOie lifted Pennv to the fence. opened with a single oil' OriL'lev. Three singles were scored off One-lev, and then Ma-on ncaught bv Peter:; < (' Penur. ■;"-(!—!.
Two balls later Smith was clean bowled 13—7-0. It was a veritable procession. Then Matthews appeared. The Inglewood 'smiter at once got going, and hit 9 oil' Ongley in one over, including two boundaries. He survived an appeal for stumping off Penny, and showed his 'gratitude by lifting the bowler over the fence and to the fence in succession. Next ball, a slow leg-break, puzzled him. Both batsmen kept moving, and 70 came up, bringing Column on in place of Ongley. Klliott drove Penny for 3, whilst Matthews waited for him, and lifted him over the fence for li. Trying to do likewise. Klliott was clean' bowled. This stand had doubled the score. Sfi—B—S. Hughes saw Matthews add, 3, and was (hen bowled bv Column. S'l-:!—(). Matthews had batted vigorously for 37, not out. His score included four -I's and two li's. Gwillim, who batted so well on the previous ,W,y, was absent.
