j 6TBATFORD ANNUAL MEETING. J
SECOND DAY. |
/ The Weather was perfect for the concluding day of the Stratford Racing Club's annual race meeting. The attendance was again very large and speculation brisk. The totalizator handled £10,27-4 10a, making a total of £ 30,525 i for the meeting, an increase of £2780 on last year's figures. Mr. Chadwick's handicapping was productive of good finishes. Mr. T. Cameron was in good form at the barrier, and Mr. J. R. L. Stanford again gave every satisfaction in the judge's box. The Wanganui Garrison Band drew_ a good audience between the races, and their music was loudly applauded. The most popular win at the meeting was that of Dr. Paget, who rode his marc Rosalys to victory in the Ladies' Purse. The doctor rode a great finish and was cheered for several minutes. Three first favorites won during the day, but several warm orders were beaten. The booths and luncheon rooms were conducted sat. isfactorily, and the secretary, Mr. Alf. Coleman, kept everything moving briskly. Eesults: — TOKO WELTER HACK HANDICAP, of 100 sovs.; second horse 15 so vs., and | I third 5 sovs. from the stakes. Seven i furlongs. | 1 2 Mr. M. I j NOTES OX THE BACTXG.
I Pern tellings reduced tlic field for the Toko Welter to live, of whirli Fore war installed a wnrm favorite. Bivonae was fractious at the barrier, and when the tapes lifted lo?t- around. Fore audfala^
were first into their stride, but when they settled down Calais was in front from Bivouac and Fore. Bivouac ran up to the leader at the five-furlong post, but it was only a spasmodic effort, and the Camplire horse soon dropped back beaten. Captain Miro then came through, ami just before the turn for home was galloping alongside Calais. Here Fore tried to gain the inner berth, but Captain Miro appeared to close in, and the favorite was sent back three lengths, Calais was the first to straighten up, Captain Miro falling away, and the former lasted long enough to score by a neck from Fore. Idol finished fast", a couple of lengths further back. An inquiry was held into the chopping out ol Fore, and Webb, the rider of Captain Miro, was fined £5. Fore was very unlucky to lose, and to the writer it seemed tl at her rider went for which ■»: is not there, and he (and not Webb) w.is to blame for the bumping. A good field of thirteen went out to c ntest the Cardiff Stakes. Veto was 1: avily supported, but Wild Daisy and 1 ora also carried a heap of money. A good send-off saw Fidessa find her feet first, and she led to the turn from Wild Daisy, Tirana, Tiora, and a strung-out lot. Veto was a long way back, but passed horse after horse, and was in fourth place as they swung for home. Wild Daisy then assumed command, and, coming on full of running, won by three lengths from Veto, who was all out. Fidessa was close up fourth, and then followed Tirana and Fortify. The public sorted out Martingale and. Mahlstick as the most likely ones of the half-dozen which sported silk in the County-Hack Handicap. Avena and Patronata showed out first, but before a furlong had been traversed Martingale and Watine had run into the lead. There was not much between them as they turned into the straight, and Watine, who appeared to be doing his best, lasted long enough to stall off Miralma and win by three-quarters of a length. Martingale was a length away, and Mahlstick next. The latter appeared to be ridden a queer race, but a glance at his rider's face when he returned to weigh in explained the situation. Raynor caught the tapes across his forehead and one eye. and was covered in blood, being dazed and unable to see where he was going. The club's surgeon found it necessary to insert three stitches into the wound. No mistake was made in picking out Tirohanga and Advancer as the most dangerous of the quartette in the Makuri Hurdles. Advancer made most of the running, Tirohanga being last for a mile, but when given his head the latter ran past Katua and Styrax, and at the halfdistance had 'Advancer doing his best. Tirohanga won by a length and a Tialf, and Styrax was four lengths further away. Toa Tere and Harbor Light were the only ones to drop out of the Dominion Handicap, and the ton left in provided a fine race. Chaminade was again entrusted with most money, but Patronymic and Draft were well backed also. With the exception of Draft, the field went off in good order, and Sweet Van and Flying Camp led a bunched lot passing the stand. Chaminade ran through at the seven-furlong post, but along the back Silver Flood and Invader took the lead. Draft moved up slightly three fur'longo from home, but still was a long way behind the leaders. Silver Flood ' turned for home in iront of Invader, and Chaminade and Draft were next. Invader ' joined Silver Flood one hundred yards f*om home, and, vigorously ridden, beat the chestnut by a length. Chaminade and Draft followed at similar intervals, and John "Willie was a bad last. All started in the Strathmore Handicap, The Dodger being an odds-on favorite, with Glenroy most in demand of the others., Patroon and Lady Amai broke the line, and carried on the running to the straight. Glenroy aijd The Dodger . being next. Glenroy ran wide at the home turn, and lost whatever chance lie had. Lady Amai singled herself out, but was joined by The Dodger inside the distance, and the pair raced home together. Nodder rode the favorite very confidently, and got home by a neck. Ratroon was a bad third, anil Glenrov J next. ' P ; Joy Hells was the only withdrawal | from the Ladies' Purse, thirteen go : ng to the post. Duianc came with a great ! reputation from Patea, and was made favorite, with Armature and Warea next. Avena and Bay Prince broke the line, and when the field strung out Avena was in front, followed by Durane, . with Rosalys about tenth. Xgapoto got into third place at four furlongs, and held on well. Durane looked like winning as he turned into the straight, fol j lowed by Avena and Ngapoto, but he I died away. Idol and Rosalys challenged and passed Avena and Xgapoto at the distance, and Dr, Paget's horse, well handled, ran in an easy winner by three lengths from Idol. Ngapoto was half a ) length away, third, and Armature fourth. The Ngaere Handicap could hardly be called a race. Only four were left in, including Crawford, who was in a class of his own. A good start was effected, and the order along the back was Martingale, Bay Paul, Vladian, and Crawford. The latter moved up in thi! straight, and won in a canter by n length from Martingale, who beat Vladian by a bead. The list of winning owners at Stratford was as follows: —Messrs. F. Webli, I £225; F. Bristol, £200; J. Fitzgerald. £100; D. King, £100; S. Brick. £140; ,T. I George, £120: W. Carter, £115; Shield and Thompson, £9O: M. Gardner, £9O; Mrs. M. Miscall, £80; J.
