A TRYING CAMPAIGN. IN EASTERN AFRICA. Times and Sydney Sun Services. London, December 21. A correspondent at Nairobi describes the country through which the enemy is forcing his way upon the Uganda as a desert, covered with thorny scrub, so thick in 'places that an officer is unable to control more than a dozen men. This wild country js infested with lions and leopards, and Hie dreaded tzc-teze fly. Through it we are now taking an active olfensive. The campaign is likely to be long and trying. The Germans are certain to defend their best country with all their might. CONSCRIPTION TO BE EMPLOYED. VOLUNTEERING INADEQUATE. Received 1, 10 p.m. Capetaiw, December 31. The Pretoria Government announces that it is resorting to the exercise of its powers under the Defence lAct. Commandoes are to be used for service in German South-West Africa and the Union The announcement adds that the situation which lias arisen cannot adequately be met by depending upon volunteer recruits. The Union troopst re-occupied Walfisch Hay on Cliristrras Day, unopposed. MARITZ RE-APPEARS. Received 31, 9.50 p.m. Pretoria, December 31. Colonel Mnritz, with SOO rebels, at Schuitilrift, attacked 4SO Loyalists. Ninety of the latter were taken prisoners. A later message states that Maritz, on December 22nd, with four field-guns an;' four Maxims, forced Loyalists, after a vigorous resistance, to retire a few miles. A running fight followed, but the rebels' attempt to outflank the Loyalists was frustrated. The rebels at sundown retired to Schuitdrift.
