SPORTING.

STRATFORD RACING CLUB. ;■ ANNUAL MEETING. f ■ . The Stratford Racing Club was fa- » vourod with splendid weather for th( » opening day of the annual race meet- • ling. The attendance was large and i / totalizator investments heavy, the machines handling £17,030 10s as against £15,928 on the corresponding day last year. The addition to the grandstand, enlargement of totalisator house, and ! various improvements to the club's ap- | pointments were much appreciated. The | racing was excellent, close finishes being the order of the day. Mr T. Cameron was in good form at the barrier, and his starting was uniformly good. Mr J. R. L. Stanford occupied the judge's box and his decisions were given promptly. The secretary, Mr A. Coleman, kept everything moving smoothly, and he and his stalf saw that things went off well. Acting-stipendiary Curry was in attendance, but no information regarding inquiries (if any) was given to the press. The catering was in the capable hands of Mrs Brooking, and left nothing to be desired. The Wanganui Garrison Band was in attendance, and the music supplied—it goes without saying was very fine. Miralma, Armature and Pat roiiata carried the bulk of the monev '• but the wiiiv.i r turned up in Captai D ' Miro who returned Ids r-upporiers a nic E ' dividend. Tin- winner is a chestnu gelding by Captain Webb, and strangel enough was ridden by 'Webb, a fact whic was probably missed by many who ofl - limes have their choice influenced b coincidence. Vladian, Arena and Ca] ■• tain Miro showed out first, and rau i ' that order for three furlongs. Then Ca]

tain Miro joined Vladian, Captain Miro was well clear before turning for home and had no difficulty in winning by throe lengths from Armature, who beat A vena by, a length. Patronata was fourth. Miralma did not get away well, and was

never prominent. A big field of eighteen lined up for tlie Borough Stakes, Wild Daisy being favourite, and Tiora and Wioletta best l " backed of the others. The starter had ie some difficulty in getting several of the ■' starters to face the barrier and they " I Were eventually slipped to a struggling ® start. Tiora and Wioletta were quickest t into their stride and showed the way to • the turn, Joy Bells and Wild Daisy iin* '> proving their positions. Tiora was done '* with as they straightened up for the run home, and Veto came very fast from e the nick. Wioletta, strongly ridden, j ? just saw it out, winning by half a length 1 from Veto, with Joy Bells a good third, 3 and Wild Daisy right up with her. Trom- •• bone got the worst of the start and ran 1 in the rear all the way. e Toa Tcre, Quo Vadis, Minora, Fore and - Harbour Light dropped out of the Strai--3 ford Cup, leaving seven runners, of which • C'haininade was sorted out as the most - likely one to score. Invader, on the - strength of his form at Awapuni, had a • good following, and Patronymic and 5 Draft were best backed of the others. 3 A fine start was effected, and Draft and 1 Invader were in front passing the stand. - Sweet Van was lying third and Chamin- ' ade uml Patronymic followed closely. Invader led along the back and turned for home in company with Sweet Van, Chaminadc and Patronymic coming fast. 1 A pretty r.iee resulted in Sweet Van winning by half a length from Patronymic, who was a neck in front of the fast-finishing favorite. Chaminadc was • kept too far out of it in the carlv stages to have a change of catching the • winner, but he was galloping over everything in the straight and appeared > to be unlucky to lose. I Numerous scratcliings reduced the Railway Hack Handicap candidates to seven. The public very wisely went nap "on The Dodger, and getting out first he never left the issue in doubt. Lady Amai and Patroon finished well, lint had no chance with the winner who got over the five furlongs in lmin 2 :!-r^ec—a good gallop for the course. Flying Camp was fourth, and Magneta last. Of the eleven carded for the Ohura . Hurdles only a quartette went to the < post. Styrax was made an early favourite, but the money was rained on , Captain Mackay at the end and the Fox- " ton gelding finished up first choice. They moved oIF in line and Katua was the ' first to jump the initial obstacle. When } the field settled down Katua was 1 in front followed by Styrax, Tirohanga 1 and Captain Mackay. Along the back j r - Styrax fell back, and the race resolved itself into a duel between Tirohanga ( and Captain Mackay. The pair turned 5 for home together and fought out a 5 I good finish, Tirohanga winning by a ( couple of lengths. Styrax was twentf ] lengths away, third, and Katua last. j Another field of four Was served up in e the Midhirst Hack Handicap. Fore was made a warm order, and moved off in front, followed by Mahlstick and Quo Vadis. The latter dashed through and took the lead at the seven furlongs post, pulling hard and fighting for his head. Fore ran up to him four furlongs from home and was well clear at the turn. In the straight Mahlstick came with a great rattle, but stumbled when passing the saddling-paddock. Fore finished full of running and Bcored by a length. John Willie made up some ground over the last furlong and beat Quo Vadis for third money. Eleven were saddled up for the Farmers' Plate, and nothing was seriously backed but Harbour Light, who was eni trusted with over a thousand pounds. , The race was full of incident, and Idol, Deemster, Armature and Silver Flood were in the lead at various stages. Silver Flood got to the front at the home bend ') and won nicely by a couple of lengths j from a bunched lot which included I Warea, Idol and Harbour Light. The judge placed the latter second but' there were many who considered that both Idol and Warea finished in front of the favourite. Armature and Rosalys were close up. The days sport closed with the Flying P:>:!><iip', five horses going into the' s<'r:<r's hands. Calais, Glenroy and Crawford were backed in that order, and they had the finish to themselves. Glenroy dashed off in front, followed by i Martingale and Calais, with Crawford last. Glenroy was not headed, and won by a bare half-length from Crawford, the latter coming at a great rate from the bottom of the straight. Calais was a length and a half further back. The journev was covered in lmin 144-ssec, which "shows that there was no waiting on the road. MARTON SUMMER MEETING. | BYRON WINS THE CUP. j By Telegraph—Per Press Association.
