THE FEDERAL PREMIER.
ADMINISTERS A MILD REBUKE. By Telegraph.—Per Press Association. i Auckland, December 30. A deputation, representing the Labor Party, waited on Mr Fisher to-day, welcoming liim to New Zealand. A large number of unions took part. Mr Fisher said the welcome was a happy augury for the solidarity of tin; Labor movement in New Zealand. That movement was the same the world over, and their sympathies should be as wide as the world itself. He believed that there should bo a constant delegation of leading men going round the world seeing what had been done and left undone, for only by such means could they counteract the spirit of conservatism which crept into their movement as well a 8 into the Tory movement. That was how success had come to the party in Australia. Here in Now Zealand they must realise that it was for men to work out their own destiny. Replying to a reference of the carters' representative to the Arbitration Court, in which lie criticised the framing of awards, Mr Fisher said that however much they might be disappointed, with the position to-day they should not forget that in the early days New Zealand did a good deal to lead the way in industrial arbitration. No one could believe that arbitration was the. end of all things. When it was first inaugurated, it was better than strikes, but the expense was unjustifiable and the tedious process of getting to the courts, especially under the dual system of the Commonwealth, made the burden almost too heavy io bear. In New Zealand it was intellectual eontest between those who held the Labor party's views and those who did; not.
