Moore 1 (Masterton), R. J. Barnes and F. Rolling (Wellington W.M.C.), W. Chill (Wellington), G. F. Dodds (Nelson), E. " 11. Severne ami W. 11. Buckctt (Canter- • bury), T. Mara (Timaru), Rev. B. Fox (Little River), and Rev. C. E. Fox (Solo- , m on Islands). It was decided to play seven rounds this week, and six rounds next week, finishing on Friday night. Play started at 2.30 p.m., the pairing and results being as follows: Barnes v. Hill (Sicilian defence). : After a stubborn fight, the former won a knight on the 33rd move, whereupon Hill resigned. Grierson v. Kelling (Queen's gambit declined). Unfinished at the end of the evening sitting, and adjourned. Kelling is a pawn to the good, with apparently a safe position. Severne and Buckctt. (Double Euy Lopez). A very even game up to the 4oth move, when Severne won a pawn, but, playing the end of the game weakly, lie allowed his opponent to force a mate on the 50th move. 0. E. Fox v. D. G. Fox (Queen's gambit declined). Through pressure of the time limit the latter lost a bishop on j , the 30th move, and surrendered two j I moves later. ! I Pleasants v. Hieka (centre counter j game). A very even game up to the j BSth move, when Pleasants went astray, ' nnd resigned on the 35th move. ' ! 'Moore v. Mara (Petroff defence). The j latter lost a knight on the 10th move j through a miscalculation, and Moore i fcored a win oil the 35th move, 1 Dndds had.the bye.
