TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB. r 1 WAY'S RACING. A MORI - SSIUL MEETING. Favored by prions summer weather, the second day's raring of the Taranaki Jockey Club's Christinas meeting was enjoyable and successful. There was again a larger attendance tlian usuai, as was shown by the xotalisator returns, which were £27-i:i ahead of the second day's figures lust year. The total amount handled by the machines yesterday was £10,050, including £29114 on the last race, a record for any one event in the club's history. For the two days' racing the public backed their fancies to the amount of ,£32,335 10s, as against ,1:27,025 lUh last year, the improvement being £-1710, a result which must largely be credited to the more vigorous policy adopted by the club in its catering for the public The patrons included many who had missed the first day's sport" and these were delighted with the very many improvements and innovations cgected by the club, and with the spick-and-span appearance of the lawns, course, and the general appointments. The fields were again good, tliouglfthe scratching pencil had been over-busy in one or two events. There were some splendid races fought out during the day. The catering arrangements were all that they should be, and the musical programme i was appreciated. ' j The lawns presented a gay sight, the ladies dresses showing to the best advantage on the green turf, which was further brightened by the numerous beds of ncmesia, phlox drummondii, stocks, j pansies, and so on, which provided a wealth of bloom. STRATFORD ANNUAL MEETING. Willi the Taranaki Christmas meeting now over sportsmen will be looking ahead for further racing in the New Year. In this respect. Taranaki is well catered for, tiie Stratford Racing Club's annual meeting taking place on Friday and Saturday, the first days of the New Year. This year the club very wisely decided to eliminate open events (poorly supported in the past), and the result is that nominations for all events were splendid. Acceptances are good, and lacing should be interesting throughout. Winners of flat races after declaration of weights will be obliged to carry a penalty of and for everv additional race a further penalty of 71bs.; or, if the handieapper thinks fit, he may rehandicap the winner of any race after the weights have appeared. * Since last January, the Stratford club has not been idle. The grandstand and outside stand have been greatly enlarged and improved, and seating accommodation should now be ample. A new totalisator house, with a greatly increased number of windows for Ms and 20,s tickets, should relieve the congestion there. in addition, enclosures for motors, vehicles and hors.es have been provided. A feature „r the meeting will lie the presence of the SVunganui Garrison Band, whose excellent music is alone worth making the trip to hear. There should be a record attendance at Stratford on Friday, excursion trains (and fares} being ndverfised from alt parts of the province and from Wanganui.
