THE AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL.
For some fourteen years or so the principal inland Boxing Day attraction for Tarnnaki folks lias been tlio Axemen's Carnival at Eltliam, and this year's carnival promises to uphold worthily tile fine reputation established in previous years. The Xew Zealand Axemen's 'Association is a live and progressive institution, which, has never been afraid to launch out, with the re. suit that the liberal prize-money now offered attracts the leading athletes of the Australasian dominions. The carnival this year will be a gathering of champions, and some of the keenest contests ever experienced in the JNew Zealand ring are expected to eventuate 011 Boxing Day and Monday next'. The champion axeman of Australasia, W. Peril, lias been chopping in great nick lately, and can be relied on to extend those who would beat the performances of this redoutable athlete, who, by tlie way, stands about (ift. *lin., and turn's the scale at IS stone. The Axemen's Cup, of' £l3O, the Xew Zealand and world's championship chops, New Zealand and Australian sawing championships are to be decided, as well as numerous handicap events. Other attractions are the great' provincial tug.ofwar and tile cycling carnival, side-shows galore, band music, and a delightful picnicking place in a fine strip of native bush on the banks of the Waingongoro river.
