TEMPERANCE ESSAYS
BY SCHOOL CHILDREN. j For some years past Mr. N. iT. MaunI der has given prizes to town scliool | children, boy and girl in each standard, i for the best essay on the temperanca wall sheets. We are asked to publish the following, which have been adjudged the best from the Fitzroy and South ■ road schools respectively:— TEMPERANCE. Think of all the money spent on that curse of civilisation, strong drink. It is the thing men should be most tern- | peratc in. Of course we should be tem- ! perate in all things, but mostly ao in I .drink. Liquors such as beer and wine, | etc., are not foods, but are very great '.poisons. They do not quench the thirst | but make the person who drinks them • desire for more This of course has fatal results. The person gets intoxi. ,cated. It is drink that has spoilt many of our young fellows. And. the trouble is that if they have it once tliey must .have it again and again until they beijCome perpetual drinkers. It acts on a I person like a magnet does to the ironsand when brought into contact with it. Alcohol after a little while begins to '.pay havoc with the organs of the body. The stomach, which should be a ,pretty pink, gradually turns a dark red ,and in time the person may die. If he does not die he becomes a lunatic and commits crimes bo would scorn to do in .his right mind. Every farthing spent on spirits is money wasted. Half our jails, asylums, and places of that sort would be able to be shut down while all the taxes that go to keep them could be spent in improving the nation. Let us all hope that the rising generation will "tear down the distilleries and brew houses, uproot the vineyards, .shatter the cider-presses," and do their best to stop men from getting that, cursed whisky, etc. ■
That all alcoholic drinks such as beer and wine are injurious to the system may be proved by noticing their effects on the organs of the body. If substances containing water, like meat and vegetables, aro soaked in alcohol they lose this water and become tough and hard. This explains why the pres. cneo of alcohol in the stomach tends to hinder the work of digestion. Alcoholic liquors have a bad effect on the liver also. It becomes torpid and does not carry out its proper functions. At a later stage perhaps it may become fatty and enlarged, but after some time it will shrivel, offering a great resistance to the flow of blood through it. The lungs too, become affected and are less able to resist attacks of diseases. In the blood are white corpuscles which are like soldiers ot the body, for in time of. disease they fight for us. However, when alcohol is taken they become more! j or less inert, and germs find an easy en- j try into the body. The filtering action j of the kidneys is also seriously liinderj ,ed. Alcohol weakens the heart, for it first beats very quickly, but after a | I time its pumping powers become ex-1 liausted, and it beats very slowly. The ] reckoning power of the brain is re- j duced, and prolonged indulgence often leads to paralysis and sometimes insanity. The effects of alcoholic drinks on the body show that money spent on i them is money wasted. Beverages such as milk and cocoa, which cost less, are much better for the body, because they build up waste tissue, but do not in. fbriate, whereas alcohol has no functions whatever for making the body healthy or for building it up, hut tends to stunt its growth. Everybody admits that many crimes are caused through drink. However, the man who drinks to excess is not the only one, who is. | harmed, but the whole of the people is ; affected, for the maintenance of lunatics and criminals is a heavy burden on the public. If England could be made sober, three-fourths of her jails and half of her! I asylums might be closed. It is true' that: drink is the only terrible enemy England has to fear. It was estimated that money spent in one year in drink .in New Zealand could have procured boots and clothing sufficient for the people in the United Kingdom. . Yet that money was absolutely wasted, for not .one person was benefitted by it, and certainly many were harmed. Let us all try, therefore, to bring that happy day in the distant future, when tlie drinks that strengthen but not inebriate shall uproot the vineyard, tear down the. distilleries, and finally sweep sin. disease, and poverty off the earth.
"I FIND T" MIXTURE ! make f/om 1 Hean's Essence more effective for removing colds and sore throats than any ( other I have tried." Mrs. Forrester, 1 Ranfurly, Otago. Hean's Essence proves good wherever used, and saves 10/- fcr , ir jo eke t. Try it. 21- everywhere. | ] HIDDEN DANGERS. ' Uric acid is a deadly poison that is produced in the human body, and to pass it safely out of the system, together : with all waste water. But it i'ocs not take much to set the ki'ceys buck, and , when they get behind tliiV cannot right themselves without help. The uric acid clogs the kidneys, causing that dull, heavy aching in the back, and sharp twinges when stooping or lifting. It attacks the nerves with neuralgia and sciatica. It brings headachss, dizziness, langour, and disorders of the urine. There is nothing so prompt and effective as Doan's Backache Kidney Pil!«, anil this remedy has no effect on the other organs, except to drive out th-? ■ uric poison that interrupts their action. ; Mrs. R. M. Wills, Junr., Leicester street, Patca, says:—"My husband suffered for a long time from severe p:\ine in his back, as the result of his Kidney* not working properly. It was impossible for him to stoop, and ail his movements were restricted, and this, of course, handicapped him a lot at his work. He could not get proper :est at night, and consequently always felt tired and miserable. So much for his suffering, now for the medicine that cured him. A friend urged liiui to lake a course of Doan's Bae(;acli3 Kidney Pills, which he did, and J am delighted to tell you that these pills dro>e il'.o pain out of his back, and improved his health in every way, in fact, they absolutely cured him. It's grand to see him free from pain, and I cinnoc say enongh in praise of Doan's Backache Kidney Pills, a remedy I consider worthy of high recommendation." Tt is important for you to look after your kidneys and keep them well- Doan's Backache Kidney Pills keep the kidneys well. "A word to the wise is enough."
