TRENTHAM CAMP.
FINE ST AMU OF MEN. TRAINING OF THIRD REINFORCE- _ MENTS. I Work is in full swing at the cam]) at Trentham (says the imes). The ilea' men have settled down in ilieir quarters and are making good progress in ele- | mental-.) 1 military urill. The instructing | officers at present are 'having a very busy time, as besides the members of the third reinforcements t'here are in camp ill,! senior district oflicers from all over tlio Dominion who are attending a "refresher' course. The men who have volunteered and are members of the third reinforcements are, if any'.lhiiig, superior in physique to any of those previously encamped at Trentham. The mounted unit is undoubtedly tlie best that 'has assembled in camp up to tile present, and Ihe eagerl'ess which the troopers display at drill is very enjouraging. Squadron drill was • learned and understood ill three days, which is not only remarkable, but speaks j volumes for the intelligence of the men. GENERAL HEALTH. Tlie health cf the men has been markedly good, and despite the rain, wind, and unfavourable weather conditions generally for life under canvas, the men have been very free from colds. A few who have been used to a country life have suffered from foot troubles, but they have been of a minor nature. Yesterday morning's storm was severely felt at Trentham, and a number of tents were blown down, but the men wlio occupied them made light of the matter, and soon found more agreeable quarters. The food is reported to he very good, and no complaints were forthcoming in ies, pectto this. _ B3:1. tsii.>«jQlfti: MORE PERFECT SOLDIERS. ■ . . -_v*« ffis Each succeeding camp is proving better in every respect. Shortcomings, as they presented themselves, have been rectified, and Lieutenant-Colonel Porter anil start' are confident that the thorough grounding in military manoeuvres that the men are undergoing will have the effect of turning them out more complete soldiers than those who have previously passed through the camp. TROOPS FiROM SAMOA. It has been announced tihat the men at Samoa who have volunteered for service at the front will not leave Apia for some weeks yet. On their return to ' New Zealand tlie men 'will go into camp for training, and before going away will be given an opportunity to visit their relations and friends. A large number ihave volunteered, but in all probability only a proportion of the troops at f Samoa will be accepted for service e abroad.
