SURF AND LIFE SAVING CLUB.

NEW YEAR'S DAY COMPETITION. A meeting of the New Plymouth Surf and Life-saving Club was held in tlie Borough Council Chambers last evening, about twelve members being present. Mr. George Tabor presided. At a previous meeting it had heen decided to hold a life.saving competition at the Last End on New Year's Day, and eight entries have already been received from the following teams:— Packakaliki, Castleclitl, East End (two teams— Ainsworth's and Boulton's), Campers (Winter), High School (two teams), Waitara. > , j , (The trophy to be competed for is a j handsome shield, presented by Mr. George Tabor, which will be on view in Mr. .1. Bennett's window throughout the week. . A long discussion ensued as to the rules governing the competition, and it was finally decided to adopt those of the Manly Surf Club in toto as being most applicable to conditions here. Copies of those rules will be sent to the various teams, with an intimation that, on account of the short time available for* their study, the rules need not be too strictly adhered to The following are the general conditions governing tile contest;— Teams to consist of seven -men—No. 1, patient; No. 2, rescuer; No. 3, beltman; Nos. 4, G, and 7, linemen; No. 5, reelman. Members must ballot for position in team. In each competition, at a given signal, the patient shall swim out to his allotted position; then the rescuer shall swim out to support the patient, who shall remain stationary, and shall remain with him until reached by the beltman. Then the beltman shall swim out and take charge of the patient, the rescuer then swimming n and holding the line several yards behind the beltman. At a signal from the rescuer the lineman shall -pull the pa. tient, rescuer, and beltman in to shore. Upon reaching the shore the linemen shall carry the patient to the allotted flag. , Points: 20 for speed in reaching patient, 10 for fixing and preparing belt, 20 for resuscitation work, and 10 for general discipline.

Mr. Schwartz (New Plymouth Baths) was appointed judge. The secretary was requested to ask •Mr. W. H. Moyes to act as timekeeper, and Mr. Fletcher as check-timekeeper. Messrs. Ainsworth, Boulton, and Flanagan were appointed a working committee, to make all arrangements for New Year's Day.

It was decided to invite the visiting teams to the East End social in the evening.
