CANADA IN WAR TIME. Innumerable proofs are daily being received of the '''up-to-dateness" of Canada in war time in the matter of equipment for her troops. The latest illustration of this is tlie description given of a wonderful little instrument, neither more or less than a spade. This, when not in use, will be slung across the shoulders in a leather case. It can be, utilised as a shield and a rifle rest, the rille being thrust through an oval hole, in the centre of the blade, converting it into a shield from the enemy's fire. When not required for this purpose, it can be used for trenching. Altogether it weighs only •libs,, and can be curried with ease 011 lonir marches, it is practically bulletproof. The spades have been subjected to the keenest tests, but it is only after they have been shot at from a distance of two hundred yards with heavy ammunition that any impression was made, and then they were only cracked. 51ait is said, have been dirrct- (.,; •,, >:>t with no effect.
