UNKNOWN HEROES.
NAMES OF REGIMENTS. WHY THEY ARE SUPPRESSED. The London Daily Express prints what i 9 said to be the text of an address delivered by General-Smith Dorrien on No-1 ▼ember 8 to the West Kent Regiment 1 after exceptionally brilliant work and. brave conduct in action on their part. | The address apparently discloses the > reason why the censorship is suppressing ' news of the achievements of particular regiments, which has been the subject of much critieism by the newspapers. General Smith.Dorrien saift: —"No matter how gallant the work performed, how splendid the stand made, you hear nothing about it. I will briefly explain why. We are fighting the most serious war that has ever taken place against highly trained armies and highly trained staffs. If we were 'to publish the fact that the West Kent Regiment made a gallant stand, or had done a certain tiling at a certain place, the enemy would at onct say: "Why, that's the so and so brigade, and so-and-so division,' and thus locate lis. It is absolutely necessary to keep | everything important from getting into [ the paper—the gallant deeds, how per- j formed, and what such and such a regiment did. "That is why our men hasten to go on performing these deeds without their* relatives knowing anything about them. I hope you understand it. It is very galling on you to go on as you do day after day and your folks at home not to know ! anything about it, but the records of per. formasees are kept, and, when the time comes, they will.be published. 'Things are going extremely well. We have had heaTy"'fighting, but still hope that the fighting will get less and less hard, because in time, I think, the Germans will realise that they are up against a brick wall. You mAy laugh, hut that is a true description. We are increasing in strength, and have reinforcements coming up. So have tlie French. "The object of tlie Germans was to break the power of the British. (They hoped to wipe us out and take Calais, Paris and Havre, but they have failed. "Russia has attained tremendous successes. She has driven back the German in north-east Prussia. Poland and the Austrian frontier, and the situation is as favorable as it possibly can be The Russian army is rolling along, and the ' longer we can retain hold,, of the Germans here the better we are going to win, and we shall win so long as we have ' the help of battalions such as yours."
